Colorado is a hub for thriving small business. I had the fortune to visit one of my favorite local brands a few weeks ago – Bhakti Chai during Sprouts Farmers Market’s Bhakti Brewery Break! I got to tour the brewery, learn about this amazing, socially responsible business, drink as much chai and sparkling tea as I wanted, and met the incredible founder of the brand, Brook Eddy!

Growing up in an Indian family, I’ve been around chai my whole life. In fact, it was one of the first things my mother taught me how to make as a child! Chai is a brew of black tea, masala (spices), ginger, and some milk and sugar. In India, people drink chai many times a day and you can even find street vendors making it to sell. When the founder of Bhakti Chai, Brook Eddy, traveled to India, she was inspired to start brewing her own recipe. Each flavor of chai is organic, gluten -free, non-gmo, ethically sourced, and vegan! The flavors are spicy and delicious – and true to authentic Indian chai.

        Socially Responsible Enterprise

My favorite part about Brook’s drive to start her business is her passion for authenticity and social justice. Bhakti ethically sources organic ginger, tea, and spices for their chai. Each flavor of chai is vegan and non-gmo. The brewery is also a zero waste facility! This means that everything that comes in to the facility is completely used in the brewing process, recycled, or composted!

The focus on sustainability doesn’t end there. In her effort to create a socially responsible business, Brook even had her business certified as a Benefit Corporation (B Corp). This certification is a rigorous process where the company must show they can ethically source their product and is a socially responsible enterprise. One of the most well known B Corps is Patagonia.

Bhakti continues its legacy of social justice through it’s GITA Giving platform. GITA stands for Give, Inspire, Take Action and is Bhakti’s new platform for social change. Here, people can join Bhakti and give to projects such as the Global Education Fund, Global Green Grants Fund, Girls Education International, and the Global Fund for Women.

        Exciting New Products

While Bhakti is best known for it’s chai, there are many new products and flavors being launched by the brand. The newest creation from Brook and her team is Bhakti Sparkling Tea! These teas are the perfect refreshing beverage on a hot summer day or mixed with your favorite spirit for a tasty cocktail! Bhakti is also collaborating with Avery Brewing on a new beer and has worked with Ben and Jerry’s in the past for a tasty ice cream flavor!

If you’d rather stick to the Chai, Bhakti has several flavors of their ready to drink chai as well as chai concentrates you can drink all week! For more tasty Bhakti recipes, you can visit their website at www.drinkbhakti.com and stay tuned later this week for my delicious Bhakti Chai Cupcakes with Cardamom Buttercream recipe!
